Blisters are painful! We’ve all had to suffer at some point in our lives, whether its through new shoes, bad shoes or a very long walk, none of us are immune.

The shearing forces created between bone and skin are what causes blisters to form. Some people mistakenly try to reduce blisters by using cream and powders, but these won’t remove the shearing forces that make the blister.

Repetition is one key element, which is why long walks or runs are often the precipitating factor.

Prevention:

  • Ensure shoes fit well, and any points of contact in areas of skin prone to blistering are lined with a material such as fleecy web.
  • Ensure that your shoes are laced appropriately for your foot shape, there are plenty of options here http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/lacingmethods.htm
  • If you wear orthotics or insoles, ensure they are the best fit possible, seek advice from a podiatrist.
  • Padding should be attached to the shoe, not the foot.
  • Wear moisture wicking socks (not cotton) to keep the surface of the skin dry.
  • Ensure calluses are managed regularly to prevent a buildup of thick skin.

If you do blister, take care of it, particularly if the roof breaks, Treat it as the open wound it is and dress it to prevent infection.
