We all know the importance of taking care of growing feet by making sure they are in shoes that fit properly, but is there anything else we could be doing?

Babies…

Babies feet are growing rapidly, just like they are, and they are a key part to how a baby explores the world. Make sure that feet are covered when it is cold, but avoid shoes before the baby is walking. Their feet grow so fast it is essential that we check socks aren’t too tight after every wash they have. Make sure the toes have plenty of room, and that they aren’t too tight on the ankle.

Bathe babies feet regularly, and make sure they are dried thoroughly, especially between the toes.

Toddlers…

First shoes and exploring! Whenever possible and it is safe to do so, let little ones explore safe areas whilst barefoot. Ensure there are no sharp objects that could damage their feet. We have an abundance of nerve endings in the feet that help us balance, walk and learn new skills when we are young.

Ensure that any shoes are fitted by someone who has been trained. There should be adequate growth room at the end, and they should not slip off when the child walks. A shoe is used for protection, make sure it is sturdy enough for the environment.

Whatever your child’s age, make sure that you trust their feet to a podiatrist if you have any concerns about them.
