A week in the life of a work experience student….

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a 15 year old girl who lives in the neighbouring village. I go to school in the local area and I was given the opportunity to take work experience on the last week of the term before the summer holidays instead of normal lessons: we were given the option whether to take up the chance and a choice of where we would like to go. For years, I have had the ambition of becoming a physiotherapist, so given the chance I jumped at it! I knew exactly where I wanted to go to get the best experience that I possibly could: Davenport House Clinic. I contacted the clinic with high hopes and was elated when I received a placement.

Why did you choose Davenport House Clinic for your work experience?

I chose Davenport House Clinic to carry out my work experience because it is a professional establishment which specialises in the area that I would like to enter in the future: physiotherapy.

I am fortunate enough to live in close proximity to the clinic so it was the ideal place to make my work experience memorable and positive.  My experience that I received at the clinic will defiantly help me in the future and the present time; my time at the clinic has helped me to dedicate myself to reach my ambitions.

What have you done during your week at the clinic?

During my week on work experience I have completed a range of various tasks. All of the tasks have been outstanding in aiding me in my desire to be a physiotherapist. In addition, I also was able to undertake tasks which are for fantastic events. All of the tasks were appropriate and I was able to take something from each of them. Every day, I was able to undertake responsibilities, experience masses of events and be educated about things that will help me in the future.

Some of these activities/tasks included:

  • Shadowing Physiotherapists – I found this extremely constructive because I was able to observe what happens in a treatment room and take a lot away from it. I was also able to witness how different people go about a similar task to make it most beneficial to both the patient and themselves.
  • Administration – I enjoyed becoming knowledgeable about how to work new programs and learning how much hard work, time and effort goes into making everything possible. I enjoyed being taught about the works of a business and I was able to take information with me about different aspects: one of these was being taught how to input information into a computer on a program that I hadn’t ever used before. I now feel to know some of the basics and I felt capable which I was given a few to do. I was given some filing to do which I believe will help me to be more organised with my schoolwork and in general because it has given me an insight into a method which makes it easy to navigate.
  • Event preparation- I assisted in the production of goody bags for local events that Davenport House Clinic is partners with. This helped me to take time and think about how to organise things to make them look professional and suitable for their intended purpose.

Have you enjoyed your work experience? If so, was there any that you particularly enjoyed?

I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my work experience at Davenport House Clinic. I settled in really quickly because everybody was very welcoming, friendly and worked as a team. I was welcomed as soon as I came through the front door which made me feel comfortable, relaxed and pleased to be there.

Furthermore, it has familiarised me in the workplace where I wish to end up.

I could not single out any part of my experience because I have loved every aspect of my experience. I loved the feel of maturity and independence that I received throughout the week.

Was there anything that surprised you about your experience or anything that you weren’t expecting?

I was surprised at how much work is put in, on top of the essentials to make everybody who comes through the door feel welcome and to make the business run smoothly. I wasn’t expecting to be able to experience as much as I have: I am very appreciative for the amount of time that everyone has given to me and everything that they have been able to teach and show me – Thank you.

Plans for the future: Following your work experience would you still like to become a Physio?

During my week of work experience at Davenport House Clinic, I have been able to reflect upon my dreams for the future. The experience that I received has made me come to a conclusion that I wish to become a physio when I am older because of the work that they do and everything that they put in to give the best to the patients and the community.
