Chiropody is also referred to as Podiatry. There is no difference between Chiropody and Podiatry. A HPC registered podiatrist/ chiropodist is a specialist in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the foot and lower limb. Foot disorders affect the majority of the people at some time in their lives.
This list is not exhaustive, but gives some idea of what a Chiropodist / Podiatrist does:
- Relief of foot pain.
- Prescription and provision of orthotics.
- Use of techniques including minor surgery using local anaesthetics.
- Preventative care for people with specific conditions such as diabetes and poor circulation
- Recognition of systemic medical conditions which may first manifest themselves within the foot and alleviation of the effects of these disorders such as inflammation or ulceration.
- Routine care of problem nails, corns and callus.
Many foot problems can be prevented by regular visits to a chiropodist or podiatrist, and potentially painful conditions can be diagnosed and treated in the earliest stages avoiding unnecessary suffering. A great deal can be done to improve comfort, relieve pain and maintain mobility.
Caring for your feet should be as much a part of your daily routine as brushing your teeth, and should include keeping your feet clean, free from infection and checking for any signs of change.
