Corns (Heloma Durum, Heloma Molle) and Callus

What are they?
A callus is a yellowish plaque of hard skin, and a corn is a cone of hard skin which is pushed into the skin. Both of these conditions can be painful and change the way that we walk.

What causes them?
Pressure, in a word. This may be due to foot shape, shoes, activity or poor foot function.

How can it be treated?
A podiatrist can remove corns and callus with a scalpel, this is usually a painless experience. It is also possible for certain products to be used to break down the excess hard skin.

Can it be prevented?
In many cases it can. Using a good emollient on the foot will help keep your skin supple. Wearing cushioned footwear can also help. A podiatrist can make devices which can reduce the pressure over problem areas, or correct the way that feet work by controlling their movement in the shoe. This can prevent the formation of callus and corns. Don't leave your callus and corns unchecked.
