What is a Gait Analysis?
A Gait Analysis is a method used to assess the way we walk or run to highlight biomechanical abnormalities. Generally carried out by a Podiatrist or a Physiotherapist, a Gait Analysis involves walking or running on a treadmill. A Gait Analysis would form part of a biomechanical assessment.
What happens during my appointment?
It is advisable that you bring along a pair shorts and any activity shoes (new and old if appropriate) to the Gait Analysis. If you would prefer a full body gait analysis then we recommend that you bring a vest top for a more detailed analysis.
As with all appointments at Davenport House Clinic you will be asked about your medical history to begin with. It is important to advise the Podiatrist of any medical conditions you may have and any medication that you are taking.
A Gait Analysis will usually have been booked if you are experiencing pain in your feet or lower limbs. The Podiatrist will ask you about any pains, strains or injuries that you may have. A physical examination of your lower limbs will then be carried out, paying particular attention to painful areas or injuries. This will allow the Podiatrist to assess the injury and to what extent the body part is injured.
At Davenport House Clinic we have a Gait Analysis suite where Full Body 4-Sided Motion Gait Analysis can be carried out. In our suite we have an orthopaedic treadmill, high shutter speed cameras, and industry leading software which will analyse the way that you walk or run, and allow you to see in the smallest detail all of the movements which could be causing your pain or injury. The information is visible on a 50” plasma screen and the Podiatrist will talk you through every aspect, and answer any of your questions as you go along.
The Podiatrist may also wish to carry out a pressure plate analysis. Force plates are used to measure the forces running through your feet as you walk / run / stand. This highly sophisticated equipment produces very clear graphical representations of the pressure at each part of the foot making it very easy to see where excessive forces are.
A CD ROM of your Gait Analysis will be produced for you to take away for your own perusal or to pass to any other health professionals involved in your care. You will also be given a detailed print out of your Gait Analysis and pressure plate studies.
