What is a Gait Analysis?
Gait analysis is a method used to assess the way we walk or run to highlight biomechanical abnormalities. A Gait Analysis can take part on a treadmill or the Podiatrist may use force plates which can be used to measure the forces running through your feet as you walk / run / stand.
What is a Biomechanical Assessment?
A Biomechanical Assessment involves a complex evaluation of the feet, legs and body position whilst weight bearing and non-weight bearing. You may also hear a Biomechanical Assessment referred to as a Functional Assessment.
A Gait Analysis forms part of a Biomechanical Assessment. During a Biomechanical Assessment the forces exerted through your muscles will be assessed. This will allow the Podiatrist to look at the whole body in terms of posture and movement to determine any underlying cause of symptoms you may be having.
The information gained from a biomechanical assessment forms the basis for a rehabilitation programme, or if the problem is mechanical - an orthotic prescription.
How can a Gait Analysis help me?
A Gait Analysis can help to detect any biomechanical abnormalities such as pronation, shin splints and flat feet to name a few. From a Gait Analysis the Podiatrist can prescribe custom made orthotics to help relieve your symptoms.
What can I expect from a Gait Analysis?
During your appointment your Podiatrist will take a full medical history and will also ask about any past or current injuries and any problems that you are experiencing. This allows your podiatrist to customise your assessment to your specific needs.
To begin with your Podiatrist will carry out a physical examination of your lower limbs focusing on any current injuries. This will enable the Podiatrist to assess your range of movement and assess the extent of your injuries.
The Podiatrist will ask you to walk or run on the treadmill and he will record your movements which will be projected onto a plasma screen. The Podiatrist will then talk you through your every aspect of your gait and answer any questions you may have.
The Podiatrist may also use force plates which are used to measure the forces running through your feet. This highly sophisticated piece of equipment produces clear graphical representations of the pressure at each part of the foot making it clear to see where the excessive forces are. The software can also produce other information such as how early your heel lifts in a step.
At the end of your treatment the Podiatrist will agree a treatment plan with you which may involve the production of custom made orthotics while you wait, or a course of Physiotherapy.
You will also be given a copy of your gait analysis and force plate studies on a CD-ROM for your own perusal or to pass onto any other health professionals involved in your care.
How long does each session take?
A Gait Analysis and Biomechanical assessment will take 1 hour. If you are prescribed orthotics our clinicians will use state of the art manufacturing equipment to produce custom made orthotics on site and in most cases you can leave with the device on the same day.
Do I need a referral from a GP?
No, a referral is not necessary for a Gait Analysis.
