What is Back Pain?

Back pain can be treated using various Physiotherapy treatments.

Back pain is a common condition and can be very painful, although usually isn’t serious. Back pain can affect people of any age but is more common in people between the ages of 35 and 55, and is the largest cause of work-related absence.

Lumbago, lower back pain, affects 70% of people at some time in their life; it is a pain or ache on your back, on the top of your legs and in between the bottom of your ribs. The lower part of your back is the ‘lumbar’; it supports the entire of your upper body so is under constant pressure, leading to lower back pain, lumbago.


What causes Back Pain?

In most cases, there is no specific cause of back pain, this is known as simple back pain. Ways in which you are more likely to develop simple back pain are standing, sitting or bending for long periods, obesity, if you trip or fall, you are stressed or if you lift, carry, push or pull things that are too heavy or incorrectly.

Rarely, back pain can be a more serious condition caused by numerous things, including; a prolapsed disc, malformation of the spine, osteoporosis and cancer.
