What happens in a Physiotherapy appointment?

Physiotherapists are registered with the HCPC, and use physical treatments to help people with a variety of conditions. The aim of a physiotherapist is to get you to the highest functioning level that is achievable for you and your circumstances.

A G.P. referral is not necessary to see one of our practitioners, but if you have private health insurance some may request this, if in any doubt call your insurer for details.

Your first appointment will include an initial assessment, which includes a detailed history take and a physical examination to assess the relevant areas. It may be that the physiotherapists observes posture, tests muscle power, range of movement or neurological responses.

A range of treatments are available, and the physiotherapist will use their clinical judgement in collaboration with you to form a treatment plan. Potential treatments include massage, mobilisation, manipulation, electrotherapy, heat therapy and home exercises, or any combination. It may be recommended to have further sessions where the treatment may alter or progress according to your symptoms and progress. Our practitioners are dedicated to your rehabilitation, and will listen to you and monitor your progress throughout your time in treatment. For comfort, we recommend wearing comfortable loose fitting clothing for your first session, so that the physiotherapist can assess movement if required.

In addition to treatment during your sessions, where appropriate our physiotherapists will offer advice on what you can do in addition to help with the management of your condition. This may take the form of exercises at home, or modification of your current activities
