Ingrown toenails are miserable! They can be incredibly painful, smelly, limit shoe choice and stop you from walking. All too often people hope that their ingrown toenails will resolve of their own accord, or that a course of antibiotics will clear up the problem.

At Davenport House Clinic we have been treating the ingrown toenails of Tameside care and compassion for years. We understand that people have a fear of minor surgeries, but nail surgery is a permanent cure for the misery of ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenails happen when the nail breaks the skin at the side of the nail. This allows bacteria in, and an infection occurs. The bodies reaction is to fight the infection, leading to swelling in the area which further pushes the nail into the skin, keeping the wound open and allowing more bacteria into the wound, which is why the infections grumble on for long periods of time. A course of antibiotics may well clear the infection, but if the offending piece of nail isn’t removed it will allow more bacteria to reinfect the toe again.

Nail surgery reduces the width of the nail, or removes the nail completely, and is a permanent solution to this problem. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic by our very experienced and caring podiatrists, and you will usually be walking out of the clinic in less than an hour.

If you suffer with ingrown toenails seek advice from a podiatrist, they will let you know if nail surgery is appropriate, and you can say goodbye to those painful toes for good.
