Spondylitis

What is Spondylitis?

Spondylitis is an inflammation of the vertebral joints. It is one of the causes of backache and neck pain. The pain caused due to Spondylitis starts to increase gradually. Other symptoms of Spondylitis include extreme pain and contraction in the back or the cervical region of the neck, shoulders, and the lower spine. The pain usually flows further downwards. It also becomes difficult to move the neck, shoulders, and the back.

What causes it?

Constant wear and tear and injury to the joints of the spine causes inflammation in the joints. The discs, which are like soft rubber shock absorbers, between the bones that form the spine, become hard and stiff as they shrink with age. This causes strain on all the surrounding joints and tissues, leading to stiffness. It can be due to abnormal bony growth on the bones of the spine, which will in turn compress the nerves coming out from the spinal cord. This results in areas of sensation or function loss supplied by those compressed nerves. As one gets older the chances of acquiring spondylosis also become more.

How can we help?

The goal of physiotherapy treatment is to relieve pain, and enhance movements of the neck and back. There are many different treatment options available to you at Davenport House Clinic including heat therapy and postural exercises.
