Retro Patellar Knee Pain

What is Retro Patellar Knee Pain?

Retro Patellar Knee Pain is the painful result of physical and/or biomechanical changes to the knee joint – the area behind the knee where the patella (kneecap) and the femur (the thigh bone) meet. This anterior knee pain gets worse with physical activity and even prolonged sitting.

What causes it?

  • Overuse & Overload – Such as repeated weight-bearing impact
  • Chronic Injury that has resulted in poor biomechanics
  • Muscle weakness
  • Prolonged sitting – This adds extra pressure between the patella and the femur during knee flexion.
  • Poor form during exercise
  • Biomechanical Problems – Including pronation (when the foot rolls inward while walking or running), or supination (when the foot rolls outward while walking or running)

How can we help?

Low-impact exercises to strengthen the knee muscles – especially the quadriceps and gluteal muscles. Our Physiotherapists would be able to help you with this.

A biomechanical assessment with the Podiatrist may be beneficial. Orthotics may also help knee pain by cushioning the force through your ankle and foot, and this has the same result of cushioning the force on the knee. Orthotics can also help change the alignment of your foot, ankle, and knee.
