Sciatica

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the name given to any sort of pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet.

Anything that compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve can cause a pain that radiates out from your lower back, and travels down your leg to your calf. Sciatic pain can range from being mild to being very painful.

What causes it?

In many cases of sciatica there is no single obvious cause. It is thought that general wear and tear on the body may lead to episodes of sciatica. This is why the condition is more common in people who are over 40 years of age or those who have occupations that involve a lot of physical activity.

How can we help?

The Physiotherapist’s at Davenport House Clinic will be able to teach you a range of exercises that strengthen the muscles that support your back and improve the flexibility of your spine. They can also teach you how to improve your posture and reduce any future strain on your back.
