Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for back pain, sciatica and neck pain in Stalybridge

If your back, neck or sciatica is stopping you working, sleeping or moving normally, you can book a physiotherapy assessment directly.

Problems people come with

Jill Harrison, our physiotherapist, sees people Monday to Friday. People come with:

  • Low back pain
  • Pain that travels down the leg (sciatica)
  • A stiff or painful neck
  • Whiplash
  • Back problems that keep coming back

Jill also treats knee and shoulder problems, including frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and rehabilitation after surgery. There is more on our physiotherapy page.

What happens at your first appointment

Jill will ask what has been happening, and how it affects your work, sleep and movement. She will assess you and agree a plan with you, including exercises to do at home.

For what to bring, see your first visit.

Your appointment

What treatment may include

It depends on what Jill finds. The plan may include a clear explanation, guided exercise, hands-on treatment and advice you can use at home. She will talk this through with you.

No GP referral needed

You can book a private assessment directly. You do not need a GP referral.

If you are insured with Bupa, AXA, WPA or Nuffield, check with your insurer before you book. Some policies need a GP referral or an authorisation number.

When to get urgent help instead

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have numbness or tingling around your genitals or buttocks, loss of bladder or bowel control, weakness in both legs, or back pain after a serious fall or accident. Contact NHS 111 if you have back pain with a fever or unexplained weight loss.

Please use those services rather than waiting for a clinic appointment. This clinic does not provide emergency care.

Come and see us

We’re in a Victorian building on Cheetham Hill Road, Stalybridge. People come from here in town, and from Ashton-under-Lyne, Dukinfield, Hyde, Mossley and Glossop.

The clinic is open Monday 9am–7pm, Tuesday to Thursday 9am–5pm, and Friday 9am–1pm.

See how to find us. If the problem is mainly tight muscles after training, sports massage may suit you better.

Questions people ask

Do I need a GP referral for back pain?

No. You can book a private appointment directly, with no GP referral. If you are using insurance, check with your insurer first, as some policies still ask for a referral or an authorisation number.

Can I use my health insurance?

If you are with Bupa, AXA, WPA or Nuffield, check with them before you book. They can tell you whether you need an authorisation number, and whether a GP referral is part of your policy.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, so Jill can assess your back, neck or leg. See your first visit for what else to bring.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends. Jill will tell you after the assessment.
