Back Pain

Back pain is a very common problem, with the majority of adults suffering an episode in their life at some stage; it usually isn’t a serious problem though. Back pain is most common in adults aged between 30 and 60, and is the most likely reason people take time off from work,.

Back pain can be brought about by trauma, lifting with poor technique, excessive sitting or standing, stress or being overweight.

Structures involved in back pain can be osseous (bone), musculo tendinous, ligamentous, or neural in nature. It is important to have an assessment by an experienced physiotherapist to properly ascertain the nature and structures involved so that adequate treatment may be initiated.

The back is complex, with many muscles acting over a complex kinetic chain involving the spine and hip bone. Muscular imbalance, weakness and overuse are common with modern living, an assessment will identify if this is the case. Sitting for prolonged periods with poor posture can create the conditions for back pain.

Our Physiotherapists can assess and treat your individual back pain need; they will use various methods to reduce your pain and increase your mobility and will also give you self management techniques so that you can continue with the treatment yourself at home. Whilst the physiotherapist will be engaging in reducing any symptoms, they will also be looking at the underlying cause with the aim of reducing further episodes of back pain
