Over-pronation is commonly referred to as flat feet. Over-pronation is a biomechanical problem occurring when a person’s arch collapses upon weight bearing. This is the most common cause of heel pain and general pain throughout the feet. The motion of over-pronating can cause stress and inflammation of the plantar fascia causing severe discomfort.
There are several possible causes of over-pronation. Wear and tear of the muscles throughout the foot can cause the muscles to weaken and therefore causing the foot to over-pronate. This can be due to aging or repetitive strain. Walking or standing in high heels for long periods of time can weaken the tissue in the foot causing excess strain and pressure on the foot. Finally, our choice of footwear can be a common factor in the development of over-pronation. Shoes that do not provide adequate support through the arch commonly lead to over-pronation.
Over-pronation often causes the sufferer to walk along the inner portion of the foot and this can cause pain in the heel, ankle, knees and lower back. Most sufferers experience pain through the arch of the foot. This condition also places stress on the bones, ligaments and tendons throughout the foot which can cause conditions such as heel spurs and plantar fasciitis.
Now that we have looked at the causes and symptoms of over -pronation, we need to look at the treatment options. Unfortunately there is no actual cure for over-pronation but it is possible to correct or reduce the problem. The symptoms of over-pronation can often be relieved by wearing an orthotic insert. Foot orthotics are designed to realign the foot and ankle bones to their neutral position. This in turn restores our normal foot function and helps to alleviate the pain we may feel in the ankles, knees and lower back.
In addition to wearing an orthotic insert, it is recommended that wear supportive shoes. Shoes should have a firm heel and sufficient flexibility in the forefoot area. The shoe should have ample support and cushioning particularly through the heel and the arch of the foot. Without sufficient shoes there may be additional strain on the tissue in the foot which causes over-pronation.
Good quality leather shoes which lace up can also provide stability to the ankle joint.
Other forms of treatment can include night splints or taping.
If you suffer from over-pronation make an appointment with your Podiatrist to find out how they can relive your pain.
