Verruca Needling

The technique of Dry Needling is used to treat stubborn and persistent verrucae. A verruca is a small skin lesion usually found on the sole of the foot. The lesion is usually approximately 1cm in diameter but can be larger. Verruca are caused by the human papilloma virus and in some cases the body will recognise the virus and resolve itself however, this isn’t always the case. Caustic treatments may be used in the first instance to treat a verucca but if this is not successful a needling procedure may be recommended.

The Podiatrist will begin by injecting a local anaesthetic into the foot to ensure that you are pain free throughout the procedure. Once the foot is numb the verrucae will be punctured using a sterile needle to disrupt each individual papillae in the verruca – this will encourage the body to initiate an immune response, allowing the body to deal with the verruca itself.

The lesion will then be cleaned and dressed and a follow up appointment will be made for you. Following the procedure there is very little aftercare involved. There should be very little discomfort and you should be able to resume your normal activities shortly after your appointment. We do advise you to organise transport to and from your appointment as your foot may be numb following the procedure.
